Temptation - It’s source and certainty!

In the verse I read this morning I was assured of two things - one that temptation to sin would continue to come my way, and two it would never be God who would send it my way.

James 1:13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone;

James’ opening words confirm that it’s a matter of “when,” not “if” temptation to sin comes. No matter how long anyone has been a Christian they will never pass the stage of being tempted to do evil. As commentator Matthew Henry says - “The best of saints can commit the worst of sins.” That thought helps me to prayerfully be on my guard against the devil’s work. As Jesus said:

Matthew 26:41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

The second assurance I received was that no matter what the temptation, God was not involved. He Himself is not tempted and does not tempt. …And that thought helps me to worship. God is unlike me. He is perfect in holiness, completely pure, far above any enticement to evil. …And so turning to Him I know that He will never lead me into compromise, and will strengthen me to overcome temptation when it comes.

Lord help me to watch and pray lest I fall into temptation. Amen.
